Conclusion
Throughout the semester we have learned what information systems are, how they work and how they benefit us. We discussed the different business strategies and Porter's Five Forces, along collaboration and information silos. The five components of an information system and social media are two other topics that we also covered.
UPS's business strategy is differentiation industry-wide and its five forces are low bargaining power of customers, low threat of substitute products, medium bargaining power of suppliers, low threat of new entry and medium rivalry amongst existing competition. UPS collaborates through email, telephone calls, spreadsheets, documents and through the DIAD, and has virtually eliminated information silos through the use of ERP. UPS uses a variety of hardware and software components to efficiently stores data, and the procedures are carried out by the UPS employees (people). Social media has been utilized through the use of Facebook and Twitter, which highlights UPS' initiatives.
This blog is a summary of how UPS uses the information we have discussed throughout the semester. By researching and interviewing Edward Perna, we gained a better understanding of the information we were presented.
